At our clinic, we offer placenta injections using the human placenta-derived placenta preparations Melsmon and Laennec.

Depending on your symptoms and condition, treatment may be available as insurance-covered care (Japanese public health insurance). We also offer placenta injections as self-pay treatment (not covered by health insurance) for those who would like them for cosmetic purposes, health maintenance or similar reasons.

What is a placenta injection?

The word "placenta" (purasenta) means the afterbirth (taiban, 胎盤).

Medical placenta preparations are pharmaceuticals manufactured from human placentas. At our clinic, we use Melsmon and Laennec, which are approved in Japan as pharmaceuticals for medical use.

The placentas used as raw material undergo infectious disease testing and other checks, and safety measures such as heat treatment and sterilization are also applied during the manufacturing process.

On the other hand, because these products are made from human-derived raw materials, the risk of transmitting an infection cannot, in theory, be completely eliminated. We explain the treatment to you beforehand and administer it only after you have understood it.

Placenta injections under insurance-covered care

At our clinic, if your condition or symptoms meet the requirements for insurance coverage, we provide treatment with placenta preparations as insurance-covered care.

Melsmon

Melsmon is approved in Japan for the following conditions:

  • Menopausal disorders
  • Insufficient lactation (breast milk secretion)

For menopausal disorders, the doctor examines symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating and flushing, and determines whether the treatment is indicated.

The approved dosage and administration for Melsmon is usually 2 mL once a day, given by subcutaneous injection every day or every other day.

Laennec

Laennec is approved in Japan as a drug for improving liver function in chronic liver disease.

Based on the examination, test results and other information, the doctor determines whether treatment under insurance-covered care is indicated. The approved dosage and administration is usually 2 mL once a day for adults, given by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.

* Whether the injection can be given under insurance-covered care depends on your symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and other factors. The doctor will decide after examining you.

Placenta injections for cosmetic and other purposes (self-pay treatment)

Even if insurance-covered care does not apply, our clinic provides placenta injections as self-pay treatment for those who would like them for cosmetic purposes, health maintenance or similar reasons.

Use for cosmetic or similar purposes differs from the indications (efficacy and effects) approved in Japan for Melsmon and Laennec.

Results vary from person to person, and no specific cosmetic or health-promoting effect is guaranteed. After an examination by the doctor, you can discuss the injections with us in light of your wishes and physical condition.

Side effects and precautions

When placenta injections are given, blood tests and other tests may be performed at the start of treatment and after a certain period of administration.

Placenta injections may cause pain, redness, swelling, induration (hardening) or similar reactions at the injection site. Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, fever and itching may also occur.

With Laennec, serious adverse reactions such as anaphylactic shock have been reported in rare cases. If you notice anything unusual, please consult a doctor promptly.

If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a placenta preparation or any other medicine, please be sure to tell the doctor at your consultation.

Safety measures against infection

Melsmon and Laennec are both "specified biological products" manufactured from human placentas.

Various safety measures are taken to prevent the transmission of infection, including medical interviews and infectious disease testing of the donors of the raw material, and heat treatment and sterilization during the manufacturing process.

To date, there have been no reports of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) being transmitted through the use of either product. However, as they are human-derived products, the risk of transmitting an infection cannot, in theory, be completely eliminated.

Blood donation

Under the blood donation criteria of the Japanese Red Cross Society, people who have received human placenta-derived placenta injections cannot donate blood for 3 months from the date of their last injection.

The blood donation criteria were changed on October 1, 2026. Now, once 3 months have passed since your last injection, you will no longer be prevented from donating blood solely because you have received placenta injections.

However, whether you can actually donate blood is ultimately determined at the time of donation, taking into account your other health conditions and the blood donation criteria.

If you are interested in placenta injections

If you would like insurance-covered care, the doctor will review your symptoms, treatment history and other information and decide whether insurance coverage applies. Blood tests or other tests may be performed at that time.

If you would like the injections for cosmetic or other purposes, they are provided as self-pay treatment.

If you have any questions about placenta injections, please feel free to ask at your consultation.
